Busboys and Poets

I don't know how I've gone to DC so many times but never visited Busboys and Poets. Thankfully Ms. S made sure that this trip would include a visit. I arrived at the U Street location on 14th street a little early and spent quite some time admiring the space. There are multiple seating options including traditional tables, couches and a few things in between. I also explored the bookstore, which had some inspiring books, and I had to resist buying everything in there. When Ms. S arrived we were sitting in the room with the stage. The menu reminded me of a diner menu because it had so many options. I ordered the French Toast, eggs, and turkey sausage.

The French Toast looked really dry when it arrived and I wasn't sure I would enjoy it. Looks definitely deceive because it tasted incredible! The turkey sausage and eggs were pretty standard fare. Though I must admit that any restaurant with turkey sausage gets extra points from me! Ms. S was far more adventurous. She ordered the Peanut Butter Panini.

Yup! She sure did. It was filled with banana slices and honey. She really enjoyed it but did state it was too bready. I will say the sweet potato fries were delicious!!

My first trip to Busboys and Poets will certainly not be my last. I look forward to dining there for other meals and also attending an open mic night or two.

Sole Restaurant & Raw Bar

After a less than stellar night, thanks to Majestic Grille, I was looking forward to an easy comforting breakfast.  We went down to the hotel restaurant Sole.  The breakfast menu was pretty expansive.  My breakfast companion settled on granola and yogurt and fresh fruit.

It took quite some time before it arrived, but I decided on the Traditional Breakfast. Two eggs any style, I chose hard boiled.

A little bit of an explosion in the pot I guess. The traditional breakfast is served with bacon, but surprisingly they had turkey sausage!

The sausage was delicious and exactly what I needed. The breakfast also came with seasoned home-fries & toast.

The home fries were delicious and I scarfed them down pretty quickly.

After an uneventful subway sandwich lunch, we returned to the hotel pretty late. It was also snowing…yes in Memphis – snow follows me everywhere! We decided to dine at Sole again.  I really wish I had better pictures, but I’ll be heading back to Memphis soon and will definitely take better pictures next time.  I started off with the Lump Crab Cakes.

They were served with creole remoulade, field greens & tomato relish. Woweee! I was thrilled with the deliciousness. The crab was definitely the main ingredient in there.  I’ve had many a crab cakes that just don’t have enough crab so I was happy that this one was perfectly filled.  For my entrée, I ordered the Blackened Sea Bass.

It was served with potato gnocchi, wild mushrooms and vegetables.  The Sea Bass was amaaaaazing!! The gnocchi was a little tough so I didn’t love it, but the vegetables were well seasoned and tasted great.  I was really impressed with my entrée.  I still decided to order dessert. After all, the snow storm in NY meant my flight was cancelled and I would be leaving Memphis much earlier than I planned. The Molten Chocolate Cake was exactly what I needed!

I ate every single bite! The caramel goodness was also perfect.  Sole was an awesome dining experience.  All their seafood is fresh and even if it came from the gulf, it didn’t make me sick J The dessert was delightful and the service was spectacular.  Thank you Sole for redeeming Memphis in my eyes.  Now I have to figure out where to eat when I go back!

Eggspectation - Downtown Silver Spring, MD

I'm excited to be doing another guest blog in Lady T's food memoir. This will be a short one, but I have a few more lined up - whenever Lady T is on travel or too bogged down, I'm here to share my DC area food experiences! :-)

If you're looking for a casual but upscale breakfast or brunch egggsperience - try Eggspectation in Downtown Silver Spring. The restaurant theme is "Les Cirques des Oeufs" (Circus of eggs) with related decor and murals creating a fun ambiance. It's also in a great location, with tons of shops and restaurants surrounding - both times I went with Ms. R we never failed to walk over to Borders right after our meal.

Speaking of Ms. R, this time she started off with a mimosa which was actually quite refreshing.

I went for a cappucino - which was also eggcellent ;-)

Ms. C decided to have an omelette and chose a good one - the Chesapeake - which includes crab, onions, green peppers, and red peppers. It was tasty, with potatoes and cantaloupe as sides. I'm not sure about the sweet dipping sauce they gave with it - the omelette might have gone better with ketchup! Overall Ms. C enjoyed it alot, along with her mimosa. I'm not a huge omelette fan, but even I thought it was a good mix of flavors.
Ms. R went for a classic - 2 eggs sunny side up, turkey sausage, and grilled tomatoes. It was very tasty especially if you're in the mood for basic breakfast foods - but Ms. R did seem to hold on to my dish more (as we did our dish tasting rotations).

Lastly, I decided to try something new, the Huevos Rancheros (recommended by Ms. R). Warm soft tortillas, topped with 2 eggs - I had them sunny side up which seems weird but somehow went really well. On top of that came the really good stuff - onions, pulled pork, and peppers, and smothered in Ranchero sauce and cheese. It was DELICIOUS! Very flavorful, and spicy (I asked for hot sauce) adding a texmex edge to breakfast. The crunchy tortilla with refried beans and sour cream was a good compliment, this is a must try!

Overall, eggggcellent!
