Nonna Restaurant

These last few weeks have consisted of a lot more delivery than I recall. I have barely turned on my stove which is disheartening. Thankfully I’ve had some time to meet up with a few friends here and there. On one such occasion, I met up with Ms. H at Nonna Restaurant in the UWS.  Before she became a Times Square resident she lived a more refined life on the UWS.  Nonna is dear to her because of the hearty Italian food.  I was open minded, especially after the kind of day I had at work.  We started with the Arancini.

Three huge balls of rice and cheese lightly coated and fried laying atop spicy tomato sauce.

They tasted magnificent and were even better when dipped in the sauce.  Ms. H ordered Lasagna Nonna.

This multi-layered beauty was filled with meatballs and sausage and topped with mozzarella cheese. It was quite a large portion and pretty reasonably priced.  I could not decide what to order so I decided to make my own pasta dish.

I selected Rigatoni, Shrimp and spicy tomato sauce. It was an excellent dish! The shrimp was incredibly fresh and the tomato sauce was perfect. It had chunks of tomato that added a great texture to the dish. The sauce was thick and stuck to the rigatoni perfectly.

Although I could not finish my entrĂ©e, I was quite disappointed when I wasn’t offered any dessert. It was quite presumptuous for the waiter to not offer us the dessert menu.  Other than that oversight, the meal was fantastic.  The restaurant has a low-key vibe and is very laid back. I recommend heading there for a week night dinner of great food, large portions and moderate prices.

Barbounia

A long while ago, I met up with the ladies for a brunch “class.” With our crazy schedules, it had been a while since we got together. We selected Barbounia, a Mediterranean restaurant with lots of fantastic brunch options on the menu.  The restaurant is located on lower Park Ave. close to Union Square.  It has high ceilings and a variety of seating options. We selected the high tables to the right of the entry way.  Our meal started with an incredible loaf of bread.

The bread was steaming hot. The crust was lightly seasoned with salt and herbs.  Although the crust was hard enough to need the knife, the bread melted in my mouth because it was so soft on the inside.  The ladies selected a variety of dishes.  The Sweet Italian Sausage Omelette was a favorite at the table.

Aside from the sausage, it was filled with roasted peppers and goat cheese.  It was definitely delicious because there wasn’t a crumb left on the plate.  Ms. A ordered the Poached Eggs Barbounia.

Quite the presentation of eggs on an English Muffin with spinach, grilled tomato and yogurt sauce.  The Crab Benedict was also pretty popular.

Jumbo lump crabmeat with spinach and truffle oil. I ordered the Spinach Omelette.

It was filled with caramelized onions and fresh mozzarella. I loved it! The spinach was fresh and tasted remarkable with the mozzarella.  The potatoes were well seasoned and slightly spiced.  The salad was well dressed and provided balance to the plate.  We also had a couple of spices added to our table. They helped bring out more of the flavors of each dish.

Overall Barbounia was quite the success.  Put it on your list, especially if you’re looking for an AYCD brunch.

Stewed Breakfast Potatoes

It seems like forever ago when Ms. O and Mr. M came over for brunch.  I’ve been meaning to write about it, but with all the kitchen and bathroom craziness, I really haven’t blogged much these last two weeks. Luckily I had some time to catch up on blogging so expect a few posts this week

Considering they bought me an amazing Breakfast and Brunch cookbook and they’ve hosted me for many a meals, it’s only right that they finally come enjoy a delicious brunch at my place.  I was super excited to have them come over and while I was planning on making a lot of dishes I’d already made, I knew it was finally time I try to recreate the Stewed Potatoes I lust after at Il Bastardo.

Ingredients
6 Idaho Potatoes
1 small onion, chopped
¼ cup green peppers, chopped
¼ cup red peppers, chopped
1 jalapeno minced
1 garlic clove minced
1 10-oz can tomato sauce
1 tbs vegetable oil
1 tbs chili pepper
salt & pepper to taste

Peel and cube the potatoes then boil for about 10 minutes until tender but not mushy.  Drain the potatoes and leave to the side.  In the same pot, heat oil over medium-high heat.  Add peppers, jalapeno, garlic and onions. Cook for 3 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Add tomato sauce, chili pepper, salt and pepper.

Cook for about 5 minutes then fold in potatoes.

Cover and cook on low heat for another 5 – 10 minutes. The longer you cook it the softer the potatoes will be so you can adjust accordingly.  The potatoes turned out quite good actually.

But they were only part of the brunch.  The rest of it helped me remember why I should cook more often for brunch rather than going out.

French Toast, which you might recognize from this brunch.

Spicy cajun chicken sausage.
The best eggs EVER.
And some super yummy fruit salad courtesy of Ms. O.

After enjoying our meal, we watched a few more episodes of Archer. I’ve heard laughter is good for digestion.

5 & Diamond

After repeatedly stating that we would brunch, S-dot and I finally got together.  I heart my neighborhood and all the new restaurants.  We decided that brunch at 5 & Diamond was the way to go.  The restaurant is kinda tiny and only seats about 30 people.  They have a bar area that seats an additional 5 – 7 people.  On the rainy but warm day, I walked over there pretty quickly so I was early.  I spent time looking over the menu and couldn’t wait to order.

We decided to share (I know! Me…sharing!) The Pancakes, eggs, scrambled eggs and chicken sausage were served with a side salad.

The pancakes were pretty good. I’m still convinced that my pancakes are better than most restaurant pancakes.   Everything else on the plate was pretty average.  The most spectacular part of it is that they served all those items together. It’s surprisingly difficult to get pancakes and eggs together at brunch.  The Fried Chicken dish was pretty good.

The chicken was a little dry, but well seasoned.  It was also served with a ridiculously rich mac and cheese.

The biscuit brought everything together nicely.

There are other reasons to go to brunch at 5 & Diamond, but I’ll let you go there to figure it out yourself ;-)

I’m hoping to try out the dinner there at some point. The menu definitely holds promise.

Birthday Brunch Part Deux

After a fabulous dinner at Momofuku, we sang our hearts out for several hours at a Karaoke spot then hauled back uptown to sleep for a few hours before brunch.  Yes, it's true, all I did for my birthday was eat! Il Bastardo was so good the first time I went that I decided that a few weeks later it would be the perfect place for my birthday brunch.  Since David Chang is so limiting in how many people can attend his meals, I made sure that I could have at least one meal with as many of my favorites as possible.  I’ve already adequately described what makes this place awesome, so this will be strictly about the food.

The French Toast gets top billing again and several of the diners ordered this fantastic dish. It was just as good as last time.  I also made sure to get a side of the sautĂ©ed potatoes. Yum yum yum!!! My next homemade brunch will certainly include my version of these stewed potatoes.  Several people also ordered the Steak and Eggs accompanied by potatoes and spinach.

While I can’t attest to the taste, I noticed several empty plates so I’m sure they were spectacular (or my friends were REALLY hungry!)

Another popular dish was the Eggs Benedict with Maryland Crab Cakes.

Negative on the soupy eggs for me, but I was all over the crab cakes.  Even my Marylanders complemented the cake. Woohoo!  I also had a chance to sample the pancakes.

They were delicious! Not quite the flavor of the Lemon Ricotta ones, but hey you can’t win ‘em all!  They definitely won on the pasta front.  Ms. O ordered the Rigatoni.

I was a big fan! Al dente  pasta and sauce cooked perfectly.  Il Bastardo was nothing short of awesome. Yea their service was a little slow, but they were very generous. The atmosphere was lively, the company was spectacular and it was a great way to end the fantastic weekend of eating.  Can't wait to go back!!

Scrambled Eggs with Spinach and Cheddar

The thing about making brunch is it's hard for me to decide how many dishes are enough. I always want options.  The one thing that's a must is EGGS! So I opened up the trusty Essentials of Brunch & Breakfast cookbook and found this recipe for Scrambled Eggs with Spinach and Cheddar. I adjusted a little because of the number of people eating.

12 large eggs
1 ½ cup baby spinach leaves
3 oz white cheddar cheese, coarsely grated
3 tbs butter
salt & pepper to taste

Beat the eggs salt and pepper in a bowl.

In a large frying pan over medium heat, melt butter. Once the butter foams, reduce heat to low. Add the eggs and cook, stirring several times, until curds begin to form.

Add the spinach and cheese.

Stir and continue to cook until spinach is wilted and eggs set.

Umm, perfection? Yes.  The eggs were incredibly delicious. I usually don’t mess with the cheese.  This turned out really well though and I definitely made some again a couple of days later J

Our brunch also included a few other items. Fruit salad with strawberries, blueberries, blackberries and peaches.

Apple Cinnamon Sausage

Potatoes with peppers and onions

Yup couldn’t be happier.  Brunch really does make everything better.

Motorino Pizza - East Village

GMTT came to town! It’s been way too long since we hung out, but I knew it’d be a delicious weekend.  GMTT, Mr. M and I went to Motorino Pizza to kickoff the weekend.  There was still quite a bit of snow on the ground but it was soooo sunny that I almost thought it was spring.   GMTT loves pizza so it’s no shock that this is where we ended up.  Considering it’s a pizza place, the appetizers were surprisingly delicious.  I was a big fan of the Spicy Octopus.

It was mixed with fingerling potatoes, celery, chili oil, capers and red onions.  Yummm!  GMTT also ordered the beet salad special.

Another pleasant surprise! I’ve come to appreciate beets so I was quite pleased with this appetizer.  I definitely stayed away from the yolk though.  The pizza was also incredible.  I ordered the Margherita (shock).

Tomato sauce, mozzarella and basil. Simple and divine.  The crust was perfect.  Thick but not heavy. I reluctantly shared one slice but otherwise scarfed it down.  Mr. M ordered the Brussel sprout and pancetta.

A basic pizza with mozzarella, garlic and pecorino.  No tomato sauce though – so obviously not as good as mine.  GMTT ordered the Cremini and Spicy Sausage.

Mozzarella, garlic, thyme and pecorino.  Based on the empty plate, I’m pretty sure it was good.  Motorino’s first location is apparently in Brooklyn.  I’m glad there is a Manhattan location but maybe some day I’ll head to the Brooklyn one just to see what the original is like.

Kitchenette Uptown

After an enjoyable dining experience in Philly, I was excited to return to New York and continue my good eating streak.  Once my train arrived, I made a quick stop at my apartment then raced over to Kitchenette to meet my mentee Ms. A.  After rescheduling and postponing a few times, I was happy we were finally able to get together.  We waited outside in the brisk October weather for quite some time before being called for our table.  Kitchenette has an insane rush on weekends from about noon – 1:30.

When we finally sat down I was a little nervous because the menu was printed differently and I thought that meant the contents had changed. Luckily, my favorites were still in there.  I ordered the Lumberjane and recommended either the Farmhouse or Lumberjack to Ms. A.  While you may wait a while for a seat, you certainly don’t have to wait long for your food.  My Lumberjane was out within a few minutes.

Two thick slices of French toast, 2 eggs any style (hard scrambled for me!) and two pieces of the best homemade turkey sausage ever!  I was in food heaven! Kitchenette truly does have the best turkey sausage ever.  I recommend digging into it right away because the freshness when it’s warm is unrivaled.  The French toast was very thick and sweet.  Ms. A’s Lumberjack also arrived pretty quickly.

Her two mixed berry pancakes topped with strawberries looked amazing.  She also agrees that the turkey sausage was fantastic.

It was great meeting and chatting with Ms. A and of course stuffing myself silly with delicious eats from Kitchenette.  If you’re ever in the Morningside Heights neighborhood and craving brunch, this is definitely the spot to go to.  Almost makes me miss being in law school.

A Delightful Sunday Brunch

Earlier this week, Mr. G and I decided to have a lil brunch festival for a few friends we haven’t seen in a while and to celebrate daytime eating J I developed the menu on Friday and couldn’t wait to try out so many new things.  I was excited because I thought this would be post 200, but turns out I’m one short! Oh well, still a fantastical brunch and totally worth writing about.

I started out with the French Toast.  On Saturday night I mixed up a slightly altered version of this recipe I found on Epicurious.

4 large eggs
3/4 cup half and half
1/4 cup + 1 tbs orange juice or Grand Marnier or triple sec
2 tablespoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
8 potato bread slices

Whisk first 6 ingredients to blend in a wide medium bowl.

Dip each bread slice into egg mixture and arrange in 13x9x2-inch glass baking dish or cookie sheet. Pour the remaining egg mixture evenly over bread. Let stand until egg mixture is absorbed, at least 20 minutes. I prepped it on Saturday night and made it around 12:30 on Sunday morning.

When you’re ready to make it, place a baking sheet in the oven and preheat to 350F. Heat up a griddle to or medium sized frying pan. Add bread slices and sautĂ© until cooked through and brown, about 3 minutes per side. Place on baking sheet in oven to keep warm. Repeat cooking until all pieces are done.  Cut each slice in half, transfer to a plate.  Sift powdered sugar over. Voila!

Looks good right? They were a big hit, but I think the Chocolate Chip Pancakes hangin out next to them were even better.  I fully intended on making this recipe, but realized I didn’t have any whole-wheat flour.  Instead I adapted this recipe for blueberry buttermilk pancakes.

1 1/3 cups all purpose flour
3 tablespoons sugar
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 1/4 cups buttermilk
2 large eggs
2 tablespoons (1/4 stick) unsalted butter, melted
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 250°F. Place baking sheet in oven. Whisk first 4 ingredients in large bowl.  Whisk buttermilk, eggs, and 2 tablespoons butter in medium bowl; stir into dry ingredients. Fold in chocolate chips.

Heat large nonstick griddle or skillet over medium heat. Drop batter by 1/3 cupfuls onto griddle. Cook pancakes until brown and hard around the edges about 2 minutes per side.

Transfer to sheet in oven to keep warm. This was my first time eating chocolate chip pancakes and they were amazing! While I am very familiar with the power of chocolate, I didn’t know it could do just great things to pancakes. Yum yum yum!!!

While those two items turned out great, I had a little bit more difficulty with the Cranberry Scones I made from this blueberry scone recipe.

1/4 cup butter, cold and cut in pats
1 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/8 cup granulated sugar
1/8 cup light brown sugar
Pinch kosher salt
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 cup dried cranberries
1/4 cup heavy cream
1/2 cup half-and-half
1 egg, beaten

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. and on low fan speed, if using a convection oven.  By hand in a large bowl, blend the butter pats with the flour, sugar, brown sugar, salt and baking powder until the butter has been combined. Add the cranberries and mix well.

In second bowl with a whisk, blend the cream, half-and-half, and the egg. Stir in the flour mixture and mix until the dough comes together. This is the scone dough.

Remove the scone dough from bowl and knead on floured counter, rolling 5 to 6 times, ensuring not to over blend; this will result in a tough dough. Unfortunately I added too much sugar to the mix so I had a really hard time because the dough was EXTREMELY sticky.  I kept adding flour to try to make it less sticky but it didn’t quite work out.  I managed and kept following the recipe.

Divide the dough into 12 even triangular shape portions.  These aren’t exactly even triangles but they’re triangular.

Arrange on a cookie sheet and bake until the tops are slightly browned, about 15 to 20 minutes. Remove from the oven and transfer the scones to a serving platter.

In the end the scones got pretty good reviews even though they didn’t look as good as I wanted them to, they still tasted good.  You'll notice the mini blueberry muffins next to the scones.  These were courtesy of Betty Crocker.  I needed a backup plan ;-)

Based on the amount of leftovers (only 4 pieces!) the Apple Coffee Cake with Crumble Topping and Brown Sugar Glaze was by far the favorite!!  Hats off to Mr. Lagasse, another fantastic recipe.

Cake:
1 stick plus 2 teaspoons unsalted butter
1 1/2 cups packed light brown sugar
2 large eggs
2 cups all purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup sour cream
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
2 cups peeled, cored and chopped apples

Crumble Topping:
1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
1/2 cup all purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened

Brown Sugar Glaze:
1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 tablespoons water

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly grease a 13 by 9-inch glass baking dish with 2 teaspoons of the butter.

In a large bowl, cream together the remaining stick of butter and sugar until light and fluffy.  If you’ve never worked with brown sugar before, be warned that there’s a lot more splatter than white sugar.  I covered the bowl with a paper towel until the mixture was a little creamy.

Add the eggs 1 at a time, beating after the addition of each. In a separate bowl sift together the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt. Add to the wet ingredients, alternating with the sour cream and vanilla.  Sour cream is kind of hard to measure, so it’s possible I added a little more or less than a cup.  Fold in the apples. Pour into the prepared baking dish, spreading out to the edges.

To make the topping, in a bowl, combine the sugar, flour, cinnamon, and butter, and mix until it resembles coarse crumbs.  I used my hands to mix and that worked out pretty well.

Sprinkle the topping over the cake and bake until golden brown and set, 35 to 40 minutes.

Remove from the oven and let cool on a wire rack for at least 10 minutes.

To make the glaze, in a bowl, combine the sugar, vanilla, and water and mix until smooth. Drizzle the cake with the glaze and let harden slightly. Serve warm.

This cake was a HIT.  I served it as dessert and even though everyone was already stuffed, they were still all over it.

We also had some home fries which I made in the wok.  I shared this recipe earlier and I made it essentially in the same way.

Mr. G also made some incredible eggs with special cheese, onions, red and green peppers.

Of course needed even more protein so some turkey sausage and turkey bacon was also served.

For the calorie counters I included yogurt, granola and fruit.

The cranberry-pomegranate punch was also very well received.

Although the plan was to have a little brunch, we definitely threw down in a big way.  Brunching on Sunday definitely helps ward off the Sunday night blues.  Hopefully Monday will have some inspiring eats as I edge towards my next milestone post 200.
